Standard straight bets carry a hold rate of roughly 5-7%. Parlays? The industry average sits between 15% and 25%. Same-game parlays push that to 20-35%.

Those percentages don’t represent the bookmaker’s margin on any single leg. They represent the compounding effect of stacking margins across multiple selections. Each leg of a parlay carries its own juice – typically -110 on each side for NFL spreads. When you combine four legs, the bookmaker’s edge doesn’t add; it multiplies. The true odds of hitting a 4-leg parlay at 50% per leg are 6.25%. The payout offered implies a probability of roughly 7-8%. A 2-leg parlay at standard juice carries roughly an 8% implied hold. A 6-leg parlay pushes past 30%. You’re not betting; you’re paying a tax that scales exponentially with complexity.

UK bookmakers structure accumulator margins similarly, though the decimal odds format makes the maths slightly more transparent. If you multiply the implied probabilities of each leg and compare them to the actual payout, the gap is your cost. I run this check on every accumulator I consider. Most of the time, the check ends the consideration.

Correlated Parlays: The One Exception Worth Understanding

Last December, I hit a 2-leg parlay that I’d been waiting three weeks to place. The logic wasn’t luck – it was correlation. I paired a team’s moneyline with the under on the game total, because the most likely path to that team winning involved their elite defence suffocating the opposing offence. If the defence performed, both legs won together. If it didn’t, both legs likely lost together. The outcomes weren’t independent – they were positively correlated.

Standard parlay pricing assumes each leg is independent. When two outcomes are positively correlated – when one happening makes the other more likely – the parlay pays as if the combination is harder to hit than it actually is. That mispricing creates genuine expected value.

The clearest NFL correlations follow game-script logic. A run-heavy team winning favours the under: they control the clock, limit possessions, and suppress total scoring. A team expected to trail by double digits correlates with the over: trailing teams pass more, play faster, and generate more total points even if they lose. A strong defensive team covering a small spread correlates with the under for the same reasons the defence creates the cover.

But – and this is the part most correlation-enthusiasts skip – bookmakers know about these correlations too. Same-game parlay products explicitly adjust pricing to account for leg dependency. The question isn’t whether correlation exists; it’s whether the bookmaker’s pricing adjustment fully captures the correlation or leaves residual value. In my experience, 2-leg correlated parlays sometimes retain a small edge. Three-leg and above, the pricing adjustments and compounding juice overwhelm whatever correlation benefit remains.

The practical filter I use: if I can articulate a specific game-script mechanism connecting two legs – not a vague thematic link, but a concrete causal chain – and the combined payout exceeds what my model says the true probability warrants, I’ll take the 2-leg parlay. If I can’t pass that test, the bet doesn’t happen.

Bankroll Allocation for Parlays: Entertainment Budget, Not Edge Budget

Nine years into this, here’s my honest position: parlays are not my edge. My edge lives in straight spread bets, totals, and selective moneyline underdogs. Parlays are the 1-2% of my weekly bankroll that I allocate for asymmetric upside – high-payout, low-probability bets that won’t damage my bankroll if they lose but generate meaningful returns when they hit.

I cap parlay stakes at 0.5 units per ticket. On a £1,000 bankroll with 1 unit = £10, that’s £5 per parlay. I place 2-3 parlay bets per week during the season, maximum. Parlays, outside of narrow correlated 2-leg constructions, are a recreational product.

For UK punters, I’d add one practical note. Several bookmakers offer “acca insurance” or “acca boost” promotions where they refund your stake if one leg loses on a 4+ leg accumulator, or boost the payout by 10-20%. These promotions can shift the expected value of a parlay from negative to roughly break-even. They don’t make parlays a profitable strategy, but they reduce the cost of the entertainment. Use them if you’re going to place accumulators anyway, but don’t let them trick you into increasing your parlay volume or stake size.
