Player performance props are where analytical edge is possible, but the margins are still steep compared to regular-season props. The Super Bowl attracts so much prop money that bookmakers can afford to shade their lines aggressively. A receiver’s yardage line that would be priced at the 50th percentile of outcomes during the regular season might be priced at the 45th percentile for the Super Bowl — meaning the bookmaker is effectively charging you more for the same market.

The props I do consider are those where the two-week preparation period creates specific game-script predictability. If one team is likely to control the ball and run the clock, their running back’s rushing line may understate his projected volume because the market is pricing based on season average rather than game-specific script. This closeness isn’t coincidence — it reflects the two-week preparation window that allows both coaching staffs to maximise their game plans.

The preparation effect is real. During the regular season, coaching staffs have roughly one week to prepare for a specific opponent while simultaneously recovering from the previous game. Before the Super Bowl, both teams have two full weeks to focus exclusively on one opponent. That extra preparation time disproportionately benefits the underdog, because the inferior team has more to gain from targeted game-planning than the superior team, whose advantages are already reflected in the spread.

Close games mean the underdog covers more often than in high-spread situations, which reinforces the contrarian argument. If the expected margin of victory clusters around 3-5 points, a spread set at 4.5 or higher based on public-money inflation puts the underdog in a structurally favourable position. They don’t need to win outright — they need to lose by less than a number that’s been inflated beyond the game’s likely dynamics.
